Washington Elementary School Newsletter - November 2016

S.T.A.R.

Mrs. DuPras had fun quizzing every student on the meaning of S.T.A.R., our PBIS acronym.
S-Stay Safe
T-Take Responsibility
A-Act Respectfully
R-Ready to Learn

Students who could recite all four received a S.T.A.R. bookmark and a starburst candy.

The students did a great job learning all four, and now all school staff can help them remember remember the school rules for a safe and successful learning adventure together.

SAFETY DAY

Our students learned about staying safe firsthand in October during Safety Day. Each class got to see safety vehicles, such as an ambulance, a police boat, a fire truck, and police car, and talk to the heroes who protect our community every day.

Welcome to New Staff Members

The Washington Staff is pleased to welcome two new staff members:  Mrs. Jennifer Santos, our new TK teacher, and Mrs. Kristal Johnston, our new intervention paraprofessional.

School Improvements

We are so pleased to announce two renovations to our campus.  After 20 years of not working, our clock tower is back to working properly. We love keeping our beautiful building, which was built in 1934, in good shape!

We also have a new electronic marquee in the front of the school paid for with Student Body funds. We thank the students, families, and community of Kingsburg for supporting our fund raisers so we can have even better communication.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser Results

Congratulations to the following students for selling enough Cookie Dough to participate in the Money Machine:

Rogue Miguel, Camrynn Ransom, Darren Moench, Derek Petree, Olivia Gutierrez, Colton Pipkin, Colter Thiesen, Stella Morrison, Noah Brooksher, Jake Sondergaard, Rylin Barrientos, Zoie Hofer, Isaiah Rangel, Sophie Vaquera, Reece Cano, and Joel Flaming.

Thank you to all the students and parents who participated.  The school’s share was $10,927! Those funds will go towards field trips, supplies, and events for
our students.

Reagan Elementary School Newsletter - November 2016

Red Ribbon Week

This year Reagan Mustangs are using the “Force” to “Say NO to Drugs."  At Reagan, Red Ribbon Week kicked off with a special assembly featuring Mr. Rick Alonzo.  Mr. Alonzo provided Reagan students with a powerful message about making positive choices and having the courage to stand up to others and being the best you possibly can be.  Mr. Alonzo painted pictures (one with the assistance of his son, Jude) to go along with his message.  We would like to thank Mr. Alonzo for joining us during this important week.  Reagan Mustangs are encouraged to dress up in support of Red Ribbon Week: Tuesday—Western Day, Wednesday—Twin Day, Thursday—Military Day, Friday—Force Friday.  Remember, “Teamwork makes the Dream work.”

Band March-a-Thon

“Let’s Go, Band!!!”  On Wednesday, October 26, the Reagan band, consisting of 5th and 6th grade students, joined the Rafer Johnson Jr. High Band as they marched from Rafer to Reagan.  Mr. Awbrey and Mrs. Sigle have been preparing for this day since students first began playing their instruments this year.  The bands stopped off at different locations along the way and finished with a lunch time performance for students at Reagan.  The students sounded great and had a lot of fun during the event.  Some stated that they were going to go home and sleep because they were so tired.  This is the first opportunity that some students have had marching.  We would like to thank all those who have assisted with this event.

Sports

The Reagan Fall Sports Season will be coming to a close on Friday, November 4, as the Flag Football and Volleyball teams (Mr. Pickrell) travel to Selma to compete in the SEAL end of the season tournament.  All of our sports teams have had successful seasons in learning how to play the game and have fun.  We would like to thank coaches, Mrs. Jimenez, Mr. Pickrell, Miss Golbek, and Mr. East for giving of their time to help our students.

Online Apparel

The window to purchase Reagan gear (shirts, hooded sweatshirts, beanies, etc.) will re-open on November 7 and will stay open until November 20.  If you missed out on the opportunity to purchase an item last time, please consider ordering during this window.  Items will be printed during our Thanksgiving Break and will be delivered to Reagan during the first part of December.

Music

Band
The Band March-A-Thon is now complete and we focus our attention on the Winter Concerts to be held on December 8 and 9.

Choir
The Winter Concerts for Choir will be December 1 and 2.  All music students have been getting ready for these concerts.

KCAPS—Christmas With Dignity

From now until November 18, KCAPS has placed several boxes around all of our District’s schools in an effort to bring in toys for needy families.  KCAPS is a great organization that partners with our schools and we would like to give back by having a successful toy drive for them.  Last year, with your efforts, KCAPS was

able to provide over 500 toys for families.  Together, let’s try and bring in more toys so more families can benefit.  The toys brought in to fill the boxes should be in the original packaging.

Santa's Shop

Santa’s Shop is just around the corner and if you would like to assist, please visit the Reagan PTA Facebook page and find out how you can assist us.  There are many opportunities to help and all are welcomed to do so.  Santa’s Shop begins after the Thanksgiving Break.

Lincoln Jog-a-Thon Rescheduled for

November 4th!!!

Jog-a-Thon Update!

Our Lincoln Jog-a-Thon was rescheduled to November 4th due to rain.  Students will now turn in their donations November 7th-10th and the last turn in day will be November 14th.  Students can continue getting pledges until November 4th.  Thanks for your generous donations!  For every $20 that a student turns in, they will receive a ticket that will make them eligible for the daily fun drawing in which they can receive the generous prizes that parents donated.  On November 17th at 1 PM we will have our Jog-a-thon Awards Assembly.  On November 18th, students that brought in $75 or more will get to throw a water balloon at Mr. Stovall.

NED Character Assembly

Recently we had the NED show at Lincoln.  The NED show is a character education assembly.  NED is a loveable cartoon character whose name is an acronym for Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best.  This assembly included many exciting yo-yo tricks throughout the assembly.  The week after the assembly, students were able to purchase yo-yos.  Students were allowed to practice yo-yo tricks on the playground at recess all week.  This event was a lot of fun, and it reminded all of us to be great citizens.  On Fridays at Lincoln we have Fun Fridays every week.  Students are encouraged to wear their Lincoln school colors so their class can win the spirit award trophy. Students are also allowed to bring their yo-yos to school on Fridays to use at recess for the month of November.

Santa Lucia Parade
Lincoln School will be having a float with the theme, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” in Kingsburg’s Festival of Lights Parade, which is on December 3rd at
5:30 PM.  If you would like to help with this event, please come to our Parent Club meeting on November 17th @ 6:00 PM in Lincoln’s Library.  Our parent club will be organizing the float, so please like the parent page on Facebook for all upcoming float information.  2016-2017 Lincoln Parents ClubFurther details will be sent home from school as we get closer to the date of the parade.  It is going to be a lot of fun!

2nd Grade Spotlight - Mrs. Rogers' Class

Mrs. Rogers’ class has been enjoying our Science unit. We have been learning about the four layers of the Earth. We especially enjoyed reading How To Dig a Hole To The Other Side Of The Earth by Faith McNulty. In this book we journeyed through the layers of our Earth and learned what each layer is made of. Each child then created their own “no-spaceship” and showed it traveling through the Earth’s layers.  We love to learn in room 25 and are excited to move on from the Earth’s layers into Fossils and Life Long Ago.

3rd Grade Spotlight - Mrs. Rosales' Class

Studio 12 at Lincoln School is a classroom full of Super Stars. We start each morning using our talent to sing about character traits, recite poetry, and SOAR!  One of our beginning units started with the study of bridges.  After reading various texts, both informational and narrative, the students worked together in groups to create their own bridge.  Each group of students used what they had learned about structures to build a bridge out of gumdrops and toothpicks.  Their goal was to hold 120 penny cars!  The students were extremely proud that they all met their goal with some students reaching 300 penny cars.  We wrapped it up with a narrative writing on the experience.  It's going to be a fantastic year with these Super Stars!

Go Fund Me Account for the Benitez Family - Students in our District

Hello,
There is a family in our district who is currently going through a difficult time. The Benitez family found out that their father was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer and is not eligible for a transplant. The father, Johnny, is the only person in the family working. The doctor gave him 6 months. All three of the children are students in our schools, two of them here at Reagan. The Benitez family representative reached out to me and asked if I could pass the word along about the Go Fund Me account that has been set up to help the family.

Thank you - Angelica Jimenez

Valley Robotics Initiative
A HUGE thank you to the Valley Robotics Initiative. They recently provided scholarships to two CVHS students to participate in classes at InnovEd. These scholarships are worth $750 a piece!
InnovEd offers Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) enrichment programs one day a week for a three-month period of time. The facility is state of the art and the educators are amazing.

Classes began this week and I can’t wait for our students to tell us all about it. Congratulations to Jase Muller Cesena (5th) and Jordan Watkins (8th).

See's Candy
CVHS students will be fundraising with See’s candy from 10/3/16 —11/4/16.

All proceeds from this fundraiser go towards assemblies, fieldtrips, and other educational opportunities for our students.

Did you know that as a school we earn more money off the smaller, less expensive boxes of candy than we do from the bigger ones? Please encourage friends/family to consider purchasing the mini assortments.  They are delicious, make great gifts, and the candy will arrive before Winter Break. Anyone wishing to make a donation in the form of a monetary contribution may do so.   Please make checks payable to CVHS ASB.

Rafer Johnson Jr. High School Newsletter - October 2017

The Rafer Johnson Color Run

We held our second annual color run on Friday, September 16th.  Students raised pledge money and then ran 12 laps. While they ran their laps we had 22 parent volunteers throwing colored powder on them.  It didn’t stop there!  The volunteers also had colored water and then got to spray students down.
Students laughed and ran for 40 minutes.  They had so much fun and they raised over $8,000 to support all of the programs that we do at Rafer.  What a fun event!
Thank you to all of the volunteers that made this day possible.  Thank you, also, to the local businesses that sponsored our event.

STEAM
This year we started a new program called STEAM.  It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.  We picked 208 students to go through two “strands” of STEAM.  There are two separate strands that students can go through. The first strand contains four classes that students rotate through.  These classes are: Microscope Lab, Math Recreation, Art, and Computer Keyboarding.  The second strand is also made up of four classes.  The second strand classes are: 3D Design and printing, Computer Science and Coding, Drama, and Computer Keyboarding.
We are excited about the extra challenge this new program offers our students.  We are creating many new projects and learning many new skills that can be used in college and careers.

#FightonJosh
Our 7th and 8th grade boys had a team member that got badly injured.  They play football on the Lions football team together.  Josh Petersen is a valued team mate of these boys.  Our boys wanted to do something for Josh.  They worked with Mrs. Carender and Mrs. Simmons to come up with an idea.
The football team made a large poster for all the students at Rafer to sign and write messages to Josh.  They also worked with Mrs. Simmons on making red ribbons that all the boys wore on their jerseys.
Our boys are working hard and playing every game for Josh.

2nd Grade Spotlight - Mrs. Seaward's Class
On Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, Mrs. Seaward’s 2nd grade learned about safety tips from Sergeant Beer.  We are currently reading the story “Officer Buckle and Gloria” about a police officer that goes to schools and gives safety speeches to students.  We were lucky enough to get our own police officer to come and give a presentation to our classroom. Sergeant Beer is a police officer for the Fresno Police Department.  He is a motorcycle cop. Sergeant Beer talked about the safety gear he wears every day.  He went over several safety tips and everyone got to sit on his motorcycle.  The best part was when he rode out of the school yard and turned on his lights and sirens.  Mrs. Seaward’s class would like to thank Sergeant Beer for taking the time to share with us so we can stay safe.

3rd Grade Spotlight - Mrs. Dignan's Class
Mrs. Dignan’s class has been enjoying and learning how to use their new Chromebooks. This year, every student in 3rd grade has a Chromebook to use in class.  Students have been able to read their Journey’s stories online, take tests online, and use many fun programs. Students will also be learning more keyboarding skills and how to use Google Docs.  Students in Mrs. Dignan’s class especially like using Lexia and Big Brainz to keep their reading and math skills sharp.  We are looking forward to a great year!

Roosevelt Elementary School Newsletter - October 2016

Students have been earning STAR – bucks for displaying STAR behavior.  A STAR – buck is a ticket given to students who are  meeting and exceeding our STAR behavior expectations.  They need to have five of them to go to our STAR Character Store where they can trade them in for prizes every week.  This is a way to reinforce and reward good behavior.  Any adult on campus can recognize any student on campus for STAR behavior.  All students are eligible to earn these sought after tickets!

These efforts are right in line with California Department of Education’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Support framework for schools.  Roosevelt is currently recognized as a Bronze Level School and we are working at earning the next level.  Students in the classroom are encouraged to “Clip Up, or Pin Up.”  Encourage your child to move on up the behavior chart!

Ice Cream is now being sold on Fridays.  There will usually be three choices, including a non-dairy selection.  After students eat their lunch in the cafeteria, they can grab their choice on the way to the playground and enjoy their treat in the shade of one of our big trees.  The children love it!

Goodies with Grandparents

Washington hosted “Goodies with Grandparents” in September. Over 400 cinnamon rolls were served to Washington students and their grandparents. The families also had a chance to get their photo taken, courtesy of Island Photography. It was so much fun to see the children and their grandparents enjoying a nice breakfast together. Many grandparents mentioned that they had been students at Washington School, which made the morning extra special!

Next up is Danish with Dads, which will happen on the morning of October 21st. We hope to see you there!

The Parent Club is up and running!

Washington’s Parent Club had its first meeting in September and it is an enthusiastic group! We will meet at least once a month and all are welcome. The dates of the meetings will be in this monthly newsletter. In addition, there is a Facebook page called :
Washington Parent Advisory Club

Please visit it for up-to-date news and announcements. Upcoming projects include the Santa Lucia float, Danish with Dads, and ice cream on Fridays.

Our district motto this year is, “What will you be?” Our staff, made up of Kindergarten, TK, Preschool, Special Ed Preschool, and VDA Preschool, are devoted to be a staff responsive to

Setting goals and being intentional with our thoughts and our time are important. Please take some time and reflect on what you will be and asks your kids to do the same. I’d love to hear your be’s and I’d really love to add it our wall. I have created sentence strips to fill out or you can create a sign, picture, collage, etc. For me, I strive to be better than ever. Having this posted is a visual re-minder for me on days when it feels hard to keep going.raiser go towards assemblies, fieldtrips, and other educational opportunities for our students. This is our only fundraiser of the year. Many of you may have friends and families that may not be interested in candy but want to help. They can make a monetary contribution to CVHS ASB.

Magazine Sales

On Thursday, August 25 and Tuesday, August 30, we had our first two turn in days for our magazine sales fundraiser and we brought in over $14,000 in total sales.  This was a great start to our fundraiser!  We still have 2 more turn in days: Thursday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 6.

After Great American takes a percentage of our sales, the money left is used to assist transportation costs as well as entrance fees for field trips and reward activities for all of our students.

The goal for each of our students is to sell at least 10 items.  Thank you for your continued support in helping us raise money for our school.

6th Grade Science Camp
This year our 6th grade classes will be spending 4 days and 3 nights at Calvin Crest Outdoor Education Camp.  With the addition of the extra day, night, and 3 meals, the cost will now be $200.  Payments can be made at any time in our front office.

Reagan Ten Year Anniversary Spirit Wear
This school year is the beginning of our  tenth year in existence.  In order to honor this we have come up with 10 year anniversary logo. We have teamed with Midtown Sports to create an online store where anyone will be able to purchase shirts, sweaters, hats, and other accessories to show their Mustang Spirit.  If you would like to view our online store, please visit:
