FCOE Requiring Identification Badges

FYI: If you will be attending a training or visiting FCOE you are now required to check-in at the office and have an identification badge.  Larry Powell is allowing school districts to wear their district's identification badge when visiting FCOE and for professional development.

****If you are wearing a visible Kingsburg Identification Badge you will not be required to check-in at the front desk.

Roosevelt Elementary School

Roosevelt Roughriders have worked so hard in reading this year!  Our school participated in Junior Achievement Day.  This is when employees from Guardian Glass come to teach lessons on community and economics to our first graders.  They enjoyed making maps of the community, and learning about careers.  We are always thankful to the employees who volunteer their own time to learn the lesson plan and teach our students these great social studies lessons all morning long.  It’s fun for the students to have a different teacher for the day, too.

On March 1st we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday and our Read-A-Thon.  Thank you to everyone who made this event a huge success once again.

First graders have been learning about “states of matter” in science.  To see this process up close, we traveled to Guardian Glass.  Each class took a tour of the factory and saw how glass is made from beginning to end.  It is always nice to see how much our community members want to teach our little ones!

Looking ahead to April, Roosevelt will be preparing for Open House!

Washington Elementary School

Spring has definitely sprung at Washington School!  After one rainy day cancellation the Kindergarteners finally got to spend an exciting day at the zoo.  They enjoyed seeing the new sea otter exhibit, touched sting rays at Sting Ray Bay, and had a delicious lunch in the park.  The students then practiced their emerging writing skills by writing about their favorite animal.

Transitional Kindergarten students spent a day on the farm at Fresno State and continue to focus on early Kindergarten skills while learning about Farms and farm animals.  The Dairy Council visited recently and gave a wonderful presentation about one of their cows.  The students were eager to ask questions about their special visitor.

Early Intervention is in the middle of their biannual student review process.  It is so exciting to see how our preschoolers have grown in their academic, social and language skills.  The students have been exploring and learning about spring time and Farm.

Washington State preschoolers and VDA preschoolers have been enjoying the warm weather and are now observing their environment for signs of spring.  Hands-on science activities have been a hit with the students.  They especially love worms!

Many classes at Washington School are celebrating Easter by having a party and, of course, an Easter Egg Hunt!  This is always a favorite spring activity.

Central Valley Home School

CVHS students are very fortunate to have so many extra-curricular opportunities.  This month, we had students attending spring enrichment classes, the Civil War Education Day at Mooney’s Grove in Visalia, and the Peach Blossom Festival at Fresno State.

At the Civil War Education Day, our students traveled back in time to the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 for a visit to a Civil War encampment.  Civil War re-enactors from the Civil War Re-enactment Society guided them through a living history lesson.  There, our students had the opportunity to select and visit six of fifteen stations.  They learned about Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, battle flags, and weapons, and spoke personally with President Lincoln.  It was a fascinating day!

The purpose of the Peach Blossom Festival is to expose children to oral interpretations and allow them to have a positive experience presenting at Fresno State.  On Friday, March 15, four Central Valley Home School students did just that!  Pierce Delport, Abby Delport, Caroline Huey, and Chloe Tabor represented CVHS at this year's Peach Blossom Festival.  The kids were very nervous but pulled off great performances and each earned SUPERIOR ratings.  Can't wait to see this program grow at CVHS next year!

Coming up next month is our Talent Show/Open House and our Organic Dairy Field Trip!

CVHS Students Receive Superior Ratings at the Peach Blossom Festival!

Monterey Bay Aquarium
The fourth graders at Ronald Reagan Elementary School had the opportunity to attend a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on February 28th.  Life science was the focus of this field trip. Specifically, students learned about the vital importance the food chain plays in our ecosystem.  Students also learned the importance that all organisms need energy and matter to live and grow.

The Little Mermaid
This is our last chance to brag about the Reagan Drama Club’s production of The Little Mermaid.  Rehearsal has been underway since January and we are excited to see it presented on stage.  Performances will be held on April 11th and 12 with a show time of 6:30 PM.  On April 13th, you may join us for the dinner show which begins at 6:30 PM.  Sunday will feature a special matinee showing at 3:00 and an evening show at 6:30 PM.  Please come and support Mr. Pickrell and the Reagan Mustangs!

Rafer Johnson Jr. High School

Room 8's Life Science class has just completed a plant lab focusing on the effects of sunlight on plant life. Each student planted two cups with sunflower seeds and Roma tomato seeds. Over the course of 18 days students watched for germination and growth. Half of the plants were left indoors. The other half were placed in sunlight each day. Measurements were taken each class period and placed in a data chart. Graphs were drawn and analysis questions were addressed. The question was asked, the hypothesis was stated and students reported their findings before the Spring Break. Pretty flowers and tomato plants can be taken home to beautify and enjoy all summer!

"The Rafer Band is hard at work recruiting new members for next year. The band council welcomed all the Reagan 6th graders to Rafer in March for "Ambassador Day" and the Elective Fair.  With the addition of Zero Period PE (thank you Mrs. North and Dr. Sever) we will be able to serve many more students with multiple electives next year!  We are currently preparing new music for our Percussion Ensemble Concert, Day of Percussion, Spring Concert and Swedish Festival parade."

The 8th grade ELD class was invited to go on the AVID college trip this year.  The students piled on a bus at 6 a.m. and headed north.  The students spent about an hour touring San Jose State University and then were treated to lunch in the student cafeteria.  They loved the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the campus and said that they could imagine attending school there one day.  After lunch, they headed to Stanford and were very excited to tour the beautiful campus.  The tour guide gave them detailed information on the history of the campus and the programs that would be available to them if they decided to go to college there.  The students were very impressed with the campus.  Upon returning from the trip, the class had a lengthy discussion about what they saw and what it might mean for their lives.  They connected with the idea that college can open doors for a person and can lead them to an easier, healthier life and a higher paying job.  They also said that seeing people that looked like them not only helped them to imagine what it would be like to go to college someday, but also helped them to believe that it is possible.

Art students are winding up the ceramic unit, painting the last of the projects they have made while Home Ec students are trying to finish up the lap quilt they are making as a group.  These are the lap quilts that will be donated to a senior citizen facility, but before that they will be hung on the office walls for teachers to vote on the three they like best.  The winners of these three quilts will enjoy a pizza party as a reward for their hard work.

Lincoln Elementary School

This month was full of activity here at Lincoln School.  We started the month of March with our annual Jog-a-thon.  Together 2nd and 3rd grade raised a total of $ 31,211.46.  In 2nd grade Mrs Seaward’s class brought in a whopping $ 3,778 and in 3rd grade Mrs Clifton’s class brought in $2,043.  Both classrooms earned pizza lunch.

We had Ethan Enns in room 22 who ran an amazing 29 laps in 30 minutes, followed by Hannah Mettee from the same class who ran 28 laps.  In 2nd grade the most laps were run by Samantha Gonzales (running 26) from room 57, and we have a four-way tie all running 28 laps:  Noah Brown (rm #6) Carino Ciano (rm #6), Tristan Amparan (rm #41) and Caleb Irigoyen (rm 57).  The students enjoyed the icy cold fruit cups after their run.  Daily drawings were held every day with 20 lucky winners per day.
Thank you to all who donated and helped make this year’s jog-a-thon a HUGE success.

The Poetry and Prose Team, along with their coaches, Carol Stone and Carol Seaward, traveled to the Tulare County Office of Education in Visalia to participate in the “Poetry and Prose on Stage Festival”!  Their performance day at the festival was Tuesday, March 12, and all thirteen team members, their coaches, and their parents had a great time!

The participants were judged on the delivery of their poems, based on the following criteria:  Voice (quality and variety); Articulation (clarity); Pronunciation (correctness); Posture and Presence; Meaningful Gestures; Facial Expressions and Eye Focus; Preparation, Suitability of Selection; Communication of Meaning and Emotion; and Naturalness, Sincerity, and Poise.  The coaches were very pleased with the judges’ evaluations of this year’s team.  All entries not only received an overall SUPERIOR evaluation on their poems, but every entry also received a Superior rating on all ten criteria!
The outstanding team members and their poems were:  Troy Bamford, Derek Brett, Sadie Quintana, and Kaylynn Alves performed “Squirrely Shirley”; Emma Chappell, Claire Lunde, and Lyric McLeod performed “Samantha Cinderella Scott”; Trista Fry, Drew Johnston, and Kendra Hodges performed “It’s Awkward”; Sadie Carpenter performed “Class Pest”; Nicolette Fierro performed “Chocolate Maniac”; and Montana Wells performed “Rich Kid”!  Bravo!

Peach Blossom Festival at Fresno State was held on March 15.  All of the students representing Lincoln received a Superior rating.  Our Peach Blossom team was coached by Steve Hofer.  Those students who participated include: Riley Beck, Adam Erickson, Joey Lee, Claire Dutra, Kaia Tate, Jenna Salazar, Ezekiel Weathers, Nathan Bishop, Jillian Regier, Kailey Emmerson, Makenna Wells, Ryan Long, Lexi Maxfield, Tanner Rosales, Daniel Ortega, Sam Chappell, Chelsea Flood, Natalee Philips, Kamryn Ewert and Luke Sever.

Room 22 is wrapping up their research reports on animals.  They are anxiously waiting for their Zoo trip on March 21.  They will spend the day observing animal behavior, writing descriptions of the animals they see and watching for how they have adapted to their environment.  We will be following this experience with a narrative writing and presenting their research report to their classmate.

On February 24-26th, Alyssa Duarte (Rafer Johnson) and Jameson McDowell (former Rafer Johnson, now KHS) represented Kingsburg in the Special Olympics Winter Games held at China Peak.  These athletes competed in the Nordic events.  Alyssa received a gold medal in the 500 meter and two silvers in the 100 and 200 meter races.  Jameson swept three races by earning gold medals in the 3K, 1K, and 500 meter races.  He did this in spite of racing against older athletes with twice his years of experience!  They had a great time at the event with about 75 athletes plus numerous coaches and volunteers.  Lodging was provided through donated Shaver Lake cabins and the food was prepared by the community of Shaver Lake and served at the Community Center.  The residents fundraise all year to support this annual three-day event.

In addition, Alyssa and Jameson were selected to compete with Team Fresno, about 100 Fresno County athletes, at the Special Olympic Summer Games which took place last year at UC Davis.  It was also a multi-day event with competition against other athletes from around California.  They both brought home medals!  It is always an exciting time to see these athletes push to their personal best to achieve a goal and the look of accomplishment when they complete a race is inspiring!  It is a lesson for life!
