Fresno County History Day

From Jodi Zapata

I am pleased to inform you that four of my students placed at Fresno County History Day. William Bishop and Cy Hammerstrom will be advancing to state on May 6-7 in Rocklin, California. They placed second in the 2D board category, and  were co-champions.

Two of our students, Seth Carrillo and Luke Schoelen placed third today in the 2D Group division.

I was told by the Fresno County that for our first year we did great. Many different districts come year after year and never place. The students were so happy. Over 500 students participated this year!

Thank you,
Jodi Zapata

Lincoln Elementary School Newsletter - March 2016

Lincoln School - A Gold Ribbon School?

Earlier this year, we found out that Lincoln School was eligible to apply for California's Gold Ribbon Schools Program.  "The California Department of Education seeks to recognize outstanding educational programs and practices.  The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools while the California Distinguished Schools Program is on hiatus as California transitions to new assessment and accountability systems."

We recently found out that our application was approved, and that we were moving on to the next step in the process, which is a site validation visit.  The validation team will be visiting Lincoln on March 16.  We feel honored just to have made it this far in this prestigious process, but we are hopeful that we will achieve the Gold Ribbon School award which will be announced in April.  We know this type of award only comes with a team effort from our students, parents, staff, and community.  Thank you for your continued support in making Lincoln School AWESOME!

Lincoln's Poetry Teams

Legends of Lincoln, Steve Hofer, Ellie Dodd, and Dean Johnston, recently helped judge our students trying out to make one of Lincoln's Poetry Teams.  We are so thankful that retired Lincoln staff members continue to support our Lincoln students.  Thank you!

Students in 2nd grade will compete at Poetry and Prose on March 11.  Our 3rd grade students will compete in Peach Blossom also on March 11.  We have some amazingly talented students at Lincoln!

2nd Grade Spotlight - Mrs. Paul's Class

Room 16 has been working on our fairy tale unit.  We've been comparing and contrasting different versions of the same fairy tale, and when we read about the three little pigs, we also heard from the wolf about why the whole "big bad" thing is all a misunderstanding.  We are also working on our opinion writing this trimester, so students had to say if they felt that the wolf was guilty or innocent - did he mean to blow those pigs' houses down, or was it all an accident?  We didn't all agree, but it has been fun to discuss.

3rd Grade Spotlight - Miss Vargas' Class

Team Vargas has been very busy lately!  Recently, we have been studying the different states of matter.  We were fortunate enough to have an in-house field trip where the Discovery Center came to Lincoln School and worked on three different experiments.  The students were thrilled to experience what we had been learning in our textbooks, right there before them!  As one of our teammates said, "This is so awesome, I made my own flubber!"

Island Community Day School Newsletter - March 2016

At ICDS our smart academic goal focuses on getting students to turn in their work.  Research shows that when students consistently complete their assigned work they
perform better over time than students who have
missing assignments.

Each student has had a conference with Mrs. Jennings and knows
exactly where they stand in regards to work completion and where
they need to go. They chart this information daily on rock status
sheets, weekly on the work completion graph, and quarterly
on the classes data spreadsheet.

Students who meet Island’s expectations of a minimum of 80%
work completed will be treated to a reward trip or incentive.

Mrs. Wilkins

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Wilkins. She has truly
created an environment where our students feel safe, cared for, and are ready to learn.  Mrs. Wilkins will be out on maternity leave for the remainder of the year beginning March 10th. We are excited for her to welcome her third child and while we will miss her, we understand that family comes first.

Mrs. Schmal will be our long term substitute during Mrs. Wilkins absence. Mrs. Schmal is a retired teacher with many years of experience working with junior high age students. She is confident that she is up for the task of working with our youth. I hope that we can all welcome her and let her know how much we appreciate her

stepping in during this transitional time.

Sidney Walker

CVHS 2nd grader, Sidney Walker, recently performed a solo, “Candle on the Water” during the Spotlight Dance Cup at the William Saroyan Theater in Fresno. She earned a diamond level for her piece which is the highest designation one could get. Way to go, Sidney!

Gold Ribbon School Potential

Exciting news: CVHS recently got word we have been chosen to move on to the next step in the Gold Ribbon School Program process. The Gold Ribbon School designation is given to public schools that show outstanding educational programs and practices.
On March 29th a panel of visitors will be verifying our application and looking at our procedures and practices. This is a HUGE honor for our school. There is no way we would have made it this far without the collaboration, support, and partnership from the families we serve. Thank you.

Reagan Elementary School Newsletter - March 2016

Reagan Force Run

On Wednesday, February 24, all students at Ronald W. Reagan Elementary participated in the Reagan Force Run Jog-A-Thon fundraiser event.  The weather was perfect and all the students had a great time as they ran, skipped, and/or walked around our tracks.  We would like to thank all the parents, grandparents, guardians, and friends who joined us as it enhanced our event.  We very much appreciated all of our parent volunteers who assisted with counting laps for our classrooms.  Monies raised will assist with end of the year activities.  Thank you for all of your support.

Basketball Tournaments

On Friday, February 5, the boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Selma to compete in the Selma Elementary Athletic League (SEAL) tournament.  Both teams advanced to the championship game with tough, gritty play.  The girls’ team came up just a bit short as they lost in the finals to Jackson Elementary; however, the boys’ team defeated Roosevelt Elementary in the finals to win 1st place in the tournament.  We are so very proud of both teams for their accomplishments and we would like to thank our coaches: Coach Snyder, Coach Lane, Coach Schmal, and Coach Vargas for all their work with our students and instilling them with lifelong lessons that will go beyond the basketball court. The boys’ team will now compete in the Kingsburg Rotary Tournament beginning on Thursday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. at KHS.  Please consider coming out and enjoying a few games.

Destination Imagination

We would like to congratulate all of our students who participated in the San Joaquin Valley Regional Tournament for Destination Imagination this past weekend.  The 4th and 5th grade GATE students worked extremely hard on their respective challenges for the past few months.  We would like to thank all of our parent volunteers who donated their time to assist our students in this important event.  Groups who advanced will now participate in the state tournament to be held in Riverside, CA on April 2.  Great job to all of our students.

History Day

Students from Mrs. Zapata’s 5th grade class will be participating in National History Day at Fresno Pacific University on March 12.  These students have been working on their 2D boards for months and are eagerly awaiting their showing.  On March 8, the students will present their boards to family and friends in the Reagan Library at 6:00 p.m.  Good luck to our Mustangs!

Washington Elementary School Newsletter - March 2016

Spell a Thon a great success

Washington students did a fantastic job on the Spell a
Thon, raising over $11,000.  Thanks to generous donations
from parents and the community, every child who
donated pledges received a prize at our assembly.  Students
who wrote 100% of their words correctly loved
their special certificates. Many thanks to the students
and families, and especially our dedicated Parent Club
members, for the support.  99 students brought in
$50.00 or more in pledges, qualifying for our special activity
event in March.   Room 2, Mrs. Ribeiro’s class, brought in the most pledge money and Room 3, Mrs. Goodbar, had the highest
number of students participating.  Those classes will
receive a popcorn/movie.  All funds go to field trips and
special student supplies.

STAR Behavior Continues

If you have been on campus lately, you will have seen our
new signs and posters all over campus to remind students of
our STAR matrix:
--Stay Safe
--Take Responsibility
--Act Respectfully
--Ready to Learn

We have been working to make it fun with our new
mascot “Georgie,” who goes to classrooms who perform
good deeds, for example, outstanding cafeteria behavior.
Students receive STAR bucks for good behavior that they
can trade in for small prizes.  Keep up the great work!

The Book Fair is coming!

The Book Fair will be February 29th through March 4th. Monday and Tuesday will be "Make a wish list" for students. The class will
come in and students may browse and write a wish list with the name of book and cost to show parents. Tuesday night will be Parent’s Night, so the library will be open from 4:00 - 7:00
pm. Wednesday and Thursday are “Buy Days” for classes to come in and buy books. Friday will be a last chance day to buy books.
All proceeds go to buy books and materials for our school library. Thank you for your support!
