Lincoln Elementary School Newsletter - March 2016

Lincoln School - A Gold Ribbon School?

Earlier this year, we found out that Lincoln School was eligible to apply for California's Gold Ribbon Schools Program.  "The California Department of Education seeks to recognize outstanding educational programs and practices.  The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools while the California Distinguished Schools Program is on hiatus as California transitions to new assessment and accountability systems."

We recently found out that our application was approved, and that we were moving on to the next step in the process, which is a site validation visit.  The validation team will be visiting Lincoln on March 16.  We feel honored just to have made it this far in this prestigious process, but we are hopeful that we will achieve the Gold Ribbon School award which will be announced in April.  We know this type of award only comes with a team effort from our students, parents, staff, and community.  Thank you for your continued support in making Lincoln School AWESOME!

Lincoln's Poetry Teams

Legends of Lincoln, Steve Hofer, Ellie Dodd, and Dean Johnston, recently helped judge our students trying out to make one of Lincoln's Poetry Teams.  We are so thankful that retired Lincoln staff members continue to support our Lincoln students.  Thank you!

Students in 2nd grade will compete at Poetry and Prose on March 11.  Our 3rd grade students will compete in Peach Blossom also on March 11.  We have some amazingly talented students at Lincoln!

2nd Grade Spotlight - Mrs. Paul's Class

Room 16 has been working on our fairy tale unit.  We've been comparing and contrasting different versions of the same fairy tale, and when we read about the three little pigs, we also heard from the wolf about why the whole "big bad" thing is all a misunderstanding.  We are also working on our opinion writing this trimester, so students had to say if they felt that the wolf was guilty or innocent - did he mean to blow those pigs' houses down, or was it all an accident?  We didn't all agree, but it has been fun to discuss.

3rd Grade Spotlight - Miss Vargas' Class

Team Vargas has been very busy lately!  Recently, we have been studying the different states of matter.  We were fortunate enough to have an in-house field trip where the Discovery Center came to Lincoln School and worked on three different experiments.  The students were thrilled to experience what we had been learning in our textbooks, right there before them!  As one of our teammates said, "This is so awesome, I made my own flubber!"
