Central Valley Home School - May 2013 News

Central Valley Homeschoolers have had an awesome month where their serious work has been rewarded with serious play!

To begin with, all staff and students worked diligently to complete the CST’s with success, and before make-ups were even finished, teacher/parent/student meetings were in full swing.  In the midst of all the meetings, teachers were planning graduation and working hard to complete the many and varied end-of-year tasks.

On the lighter side, the month was not all seriousness and responsibility – two field trips, a picnic/swim party, and the eighth grade outing at Blackbeard’s – our students had fun!  This year, our students were not the only ones enjoying some well-earned rewards.  For the first time ever, the CVHS staff celebrated the year’s end away from the office – a Grizzlies game held in “the box” at Grizzly’s Stadium!  (Thanks to Sandi Swanson for arranging this very special event.)

As the year concludes, we reflect with pleasure on the successes we have had with our homeschool families, and we look forward to the changes planned for the future with excitement.

Look for Central Valley Home School advertisements on TV this summer!  We begin again in August!

Rafer Johnson Jr. High School - May 2013 News

CST @ RJJH

Each year we have a CST motto contest.  The students develop a motto in their torch classes and then they create a poster to go with it.  We vote on the mottos as a school to come up with a winner.  This year the winner was Mr. Anderson’s torch class.  The motto for our school was: @K-Town Rafer: CST #831.

Our API goal is 831 this year.  We held a CST rally and the students got to watch the staff CST video.  You can find it on our website.  Each student was then given a CST t-shirt to wear during testing.

Leadership Headed to the CASL conference in April.

Students traveled to San Jose for three days.  They took classes on leadership.  The theme was “Know the story, know the person.”  Students came back with many exciting ideas for next year.  They were also treated to a night at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk sponsored by USA Student travel.

Reagan Elementary School - May 2013 News

That's a Wrap!

After forty students took the stage with confidence April 11-14, the curtains have closed on another great production.  The Reagan Elementary drama students were supported with countless hours volunteered by parents, community members, and teachers.  This year's production of The Little Mermaid, Jr. was a hit with many people, but especially the little girls of Kingsburg who dreamed of one day being a Disney princess.  With wide eyes and amazed faces, audience members greeted our actors with appreciation and admiration following each packed show.  This was our sixth production at Reagan Elementary and parents and students are already looking forward to next year.  We hope you were able to enjoy a performance and look forward to watching our students develop their talents in the classroom and on the stage.

Lincoln Elementary School - May 2013 News

As the end of the year approaches we are saying good-bye to three very valuable co-workers.  We say farewell and happy retirement to Lisa Baptista, Bob Long and Ellen Coulthard.  Lisa has been here at Lincoln for 18 years and also works at Reagan School.  She has demonstrated leadership qualities as she worked here with the paraprofessionals.  She has done more than her share of yard duty and time out.  We will miss her smile and friendship.  She is retiring to enjoy her family, especially those dear grandchildren of hers.

Bob Long has been with us for 26 years teaching 3rd grade.  He is such a sweetheart!!!  We can always count on Bob to cover any duty necessary.  The Lincoln Track Meet just won’t be the same without him.  Bob is retiring to enjoy camping, traveling and the outdoors.  He and his wife, Marsha, will be missed.

Ellen Coulthard has been with us for 34 years.  She is always early to school and ready for class.  She is dedicated to her students.  She has seen co-workers come and go and made lifetime friends here.  Ellen is retiring to travel, garden and enjoy her friends.  We wish all three the best of life and lots of love and laughter.  We will miss you!!!

Lincoln students, parents, and teachers came together for Open House on May 23rd.  Before Open House, all families were invited to have a hot dog dinner and listen to their children sing patriotic songs, led by Emily Broderick.  The Girl Scouts provided dessert for sale, and Island Photography was on hand to take free family photos.  It was a fun time had by all.

Lincoln students and staff are enjoying our annual end-of-the-year Track Meet.  This is always an exciting and memorable event.  Everyone is appreciating the cool weather!  A new event was added this year, Ring Toss, which the kids really enjoyed.  It’s always great to see the strong parent support during this event.  On the final day, students get to compete against staff and parents in a baton relay.  It’s one of the most exciting moments of the school year!  Many parent participants and spectators are former Lincoln students who remember their time in the Lincoln Track Meet!

All of the 3rd grade classes will be going on a walking field trip starting next week.  Two classes each day will be visiting many businesses downtown.  This will be the first year that all of the classes will take part in this trip.  It is a very tight schedule but it gives the students good exposure to some of the behind-the-scene workings of places they see in our community.  We will be touring the Dala Horse, home of the best Swedish pancake around, Ideal Bakery to see a 100-year-old oven that bakes the best Mexican Bread in the valley.  We will also drop by E&e Entertainment to learn about the summer programs they offer.  We will learn about economics from Bank of America and Kingsburg Supermarket.  The students are also excited about learning how Kingsburg City Hall makes decisions that affect all of us.  We will end our tour with a sample of ice cream from Baby Cakes Ice Cream Parlor, lunch in the park, and the final destination, the Kingsburg Police Department.  We will be creating advertisement posters for the windows of these businesses that make Kingsburg such a great place to live.

3rd Graders Visit the Historical Park
The 3rd grade classes have been visiting the Kingsburg Historical Park for the past three weeks.  Four more classes will be going in the next two weeks.  The students have enjoyed looking at many things related to the history of the Kingsburg community.  Small groups were led by docents from the Historical Park.  One of the highlights for the boys and girls was walking through the old Clay School House.  They also enjoyed the old Ball House with all its dated items on display.  A hot dog lunch was prepared and served by the Lincoln School cafeteria.  The students are doing a lot of writing about their experience after going on this field trip.  All in all, they had a great time seeing some of the history of Kingsburg.

Mrs. Stone’s second-graders, in room 31, have been busy traveling all year!  They began a literary trip across America in August!  They enjoyed many activities as they crossed the country and learned about the geography and history of America!  In March, they hosted a huge Bon Voyage Party in New York City, as they prepared to take off on a trip around the world!  They have been traveling from continent to continent since coming back from Easter Break!  They learned a lot about the Holocaust and WWII when they were in Germany.  In France, they visited the Eiffel Tower and the Paris Opera House!  They enjoyed an “Afternoon in Paris” party and learned to speak a little French!  While in Asia, they traveled “On the Road to Hong Kong” and had a fabulous Chinese Luncheon!  They are currently traveling “down under” in Australia!  They have spent a lot of time reading and writing about their travels, collecting post cards and other souvenirs, and enjoying some fun celebrations and foods, too!  It won’t be long before they will be “On the Go to Mexico!”  Mmmmm!  An enchilada feast is on their horizon!

Follow-up to Special Olympics article last month: Alyssa Duarte (RJJH) and Jameson McDowell (formally RJJH, now KHS) of Kingsburg were both asked to join “Fresno Fire,” the Fresno County delegation which will be attending the Summer Games at University of Calif. Davis on June 24th, 25th and 26th.  Congratulations to these athletes!

Roosevelt Elementary School - May 2013 News

The end of the year is always an exciting time in first grade.  Our students have made such tremendous growth.  Our little Roughriders are now readers and writers!

We started the month of May with our open house on May 2nd.  We had a wonderful turnout with most students bringing their whole family.  The rooms were filled with projects and writing with ocean themes, author studies, and spring themes.

We had our field trips to Storyland on May 16th and 17th.  The students had been learning stories and poems and were delighted to recognize the exhibits.  The Little Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe and King Arthur’s Castle were favorites.  We also heard an updated version of The Three Little Pigs from Mother Goose herself!

On the 30th we had our field day with stations set up around the school.  With tug-o-war, relay races, basketball and more, we got lots of exercise as we had fun.

We are looking forward to a music assembly hosted by our own Rafer Johnson Band next week.  It’s great to see the students excited about what instruments they might like to play in the future.

Overall, it’s been another great year with our fantastic first graders!

Washington Elementary School - May 2013 News

Washington School is ending the year with a flurry of fun activities.  We had a great turn-out for Muffins with Mom.  It was a beautiful and special morning for moms and students.  Washington celebrated the hard work of the Parent Club and showed their appreciation with a small party to honor them.  The staff is incredibly grateful for all their contributions this school year.  A big thank you to Parents Club for a fabulous Fiesta on Teacher Appreciation Day!

Open House was held on May 21st and was a success.  The students proudly showed parents all their writing and projects.  During the month of May, Kindergarten students took an exciting adventure to Hanford on Amtrak.  A highlight of the trip for some students was eating lunch on the train.  Kindergartners will be performing for their parents and presenting their families with a year-end gift on June 3rd for Parents Day.  Other year-end activities are Water Day, Family Picnic in the Park, and Kindergarten Olympics.

Washington State Preschool and VDA State Preschool are ending their year with a unit on Ocean and Sea Life.  They will be holding a promotion celebration during the last week of school and the students are excited and ready to be Washington Kindergartners next year!

Early Intervention is also ending the school year with activities focusing on Ocean and Sea Life.  Summer safety is another important focus at the end of the year.

The Washington School Staff has enjoyed watching their students grow this year!

E&e Theatre's, The Draper Street Juniors, Premier "Welcome to Broadway!" During Swedish Festival

Hello!  I am Emily Broderick, the new director of choirs and classroom music teacher for the Kingsburg Elementary Charter School District.  I teach music at 3 different school sites in our district (Lincoln Elementary, Reagan Elementary and Rafer Johnson Jr. High) and as the year has gone by, I’ve met a lot of talented kids.  I always wondered if there was a way that all these talented kids could come together and put on an amazing performance.  Well, the wait has ended!!!

This weekend during Swedish Festival, E&e Theatre will debut their new junior company, The Draper Street Juniors!  This junior company gives the opportunity for talented performing kids from all the surrounding schools to come together and work on a fabulous performance for the Kingsburg community.  As the Musical and Main Director, I only saw it fitting that for their debut performance, it would focus on singing… and what better way to combine singing, acting and movement than to do a Broadway Review!  Our show, “Welcome to Broadway!” contains 27 songs from over 20 classic Broadway musical shows with a variety of solos, duets, small groups and whole company numbers.  This is a very kid-friendly show so bring the whole family!

Tickets can be purchased online or at the door but hurry!  Friday night is already pretty much sold out!  Please come out and support the dedicated and talented students of our Kingsburg Schools!  After your done watching the parade and enjoying Swedish Festival, come watch the show and enjoy the comfort, cool air conditioning and amazing entertainment at E&e Theatre!  You won’t regret it, or forget it!

Congratulations to Washington State Preschool

On April 30th,  the Central Valley Children’s Services Network held their 2nd Annual Accreditation Recognition Ceremony for NAEYC accreditation.  Washington State Preschool was recognized for receiving the accreditation.  Katja Carlton did a wonderful job of accepting the certificate from CSN and First Five Fresno County.  Washington Preschool-VDA was recognized for working on accreditation.  Out of 300 Preschools in Fresno County, only 19 are accredited.

We are very proud of our team!

Central Valley Home School - April News

                                                CENTRAL VALLEY HOME SCHOOL

April began with the CVHS combined Open House and Talent Show held at Roosevelt.  Our students and their families ate cookies while enjoying the student work decorating the auditorium.  Then, many of our students displayed their individual talents ranging from dance, gymnastics, recitations, and stand-up comedy to such musical exhibitions as guitar duets, singing, and piano.  Our choir groups all sang, and the K-1 Farm Class recited poetry and sang “Down on Grandpa’s Farm.”

Next came the field trip to the McAfee Organic Dairy near Kerman.  Students and parents learned about raw milk and its production while riding in a “tour mobile” around the dairy.  The free-range cows were definitely “happy” cows!

Most recently was the STAR Fun Day.  Our staff came up with this idea to combine fun activities with necessary STAR testing for 8th graders and practice testing for grades 2-4.  So, at 12:00 on April 18 following the testing, our students and their families gathered at Teapot Park for picnicking, ice cream sundaes, graduation planning, and a tour of the fire station.  It was a successful work and play event!

 WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Washington School has spent the month of April exploring and learning through the world of animals!  Kindergarten, Early Intervention, State Preschool and VDA preschool have studied farm animals, insects, and reptiles.  Many classes are also learning about seeds and planting.  Studying the life cycle of a butterfly is always a favorite activity of the students.  Washington Staff has also been busy registering students for Preschool and Kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year!

Farm day was held on April 19th! The students spent the morning rotating between several fun and educational activity stations. Some of the activities included planting seeds, riding a tractor-pulled wagon, a horse presentation, a farm dog presentation, and interacting with sheep, goats, chickens, and donkeys. The students and the staff were surprised to see their Principal, Mrs. Esau, observing farm day from atop a beautiful horse! A big thank you to Ms. Goodbar and Ms. Donabedian for organizing such a special day. Also a big thank you to Ms. Sperling and her Kingsburg High Ag students who helped the children plant seeds; Mr. Johnston, Ms. Penfold, and Mr. Woods for sharing their animals, Mr. King for donating the wagon, and Mr. Bishop for driving the tractor that pulled the wagon.

LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Lincoln Staff will be hosting the District Retirement party scheduled for the 15th of May in the Lincoln Cafeteria.  The theme for this year’s party is “Tropical Paradise.”  We will be honoring four retirees:  Lisa Baptista - Paraprofessional (18 years of service), Ellen Coulthard - 3rd grade teacher (34 years of service), Bob Long – 3rd grade teacher (26 years of service) and Ruth Schletewitz – 7th and 8th grade teacher (27 years of service).  Please return your RSVP’s to the Lincoln Office by the 9th of May.  We hope to see you all there.  Don’t forget to dress tropical for the occasion.

On April 12, 2013, our very own Lincoln Eagles 3rd grade classes participated in our annual Spelling Bee.  We had top spellers from all ten classes to represent their classrooms.  The excitement was in the air as 250+ students came into the cafeteria to enjoy some friendly competition.  With Mrs. Dupras being our Spell Master and Mrs. Jones, Ms. Smith, and Mrs. Villanueva being our judges, we were set for an exciting time.  Our final rounds for first place went for seven rounds, between Faith Davis and Faith Luna.  In first place was Faith Davis.  In second place was Faith Luna and rounding up third place was Shelby Manley.  We were very proud of our students, both in the competition and in the audience.  Thank you, students and teachers, on a job well done.

Mrs. Casida and Mrs. Seaward have been doing a unit on Long Ago and have been discussing culture and heritage in the United States.  The children have had to find out what blend of different cultures make up their uniqueness.  After reading "Jalapeno Bagels" and learning about Mexican, African, Irish, Central American, Chinese, and Japanese culture, they had to do an interview on an ancestor to find exactly what their heritage and traditions are.  They also had to find out what was different when their Grandparents or Great-grandparents when they were younger.  To conclude this unit we had a "Culture Celebration.”  The parents brought in food that would represent one of their children’s cultures.  We had WONDERFUL food and a great celebration time.  We will end with a walking field trip to the Kingsburg Historical Park to compare and contrast the difference between now and long ago.  Thank you, parents, for all your help.

Mrs. Eckgren’s 2nd graders had a blast during their field trip to the Discovery Center.  There were marvelously messy chemistry experiments in science class.  Students explored all kinds of physics and natural science exhibits, including sound, magnetism, space, and reptiles.  The outdoor maze was a favorite for many, while others enjoyed the pond area searching for fish and watching the family of ducks.

Room 39 (Mrs. Harris) wrote a narrative on the shared eating experience of Jalapeno Bagels, Chango Bars and Pan Dulce.  Yum!  We also performed Contraction Surgery on our contraction spelling words.  All students wore gloves, face masks and used band aids to help heal the wounds.

REAGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  Reagan Music Programs
The Reagan Percussionists joined the Rafer and KHS drummers for the 4th Annual Percussion Ensemble Concert on April 15.  Forty-four students performed pieces by schools and all together in the big finale.  Mr. Pietz wrote an amazing piece for the KHS Winter Percussion group.  Our Reagan students enjoyed watching that performance and realizing it would be their turn in a few short years.  Our Spring Concerts will be held at Reagan on May 9 & 10 @ 2:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room.  All are welcome to attend.  The Rafer Jazz band will be our guest performers.

Reagan Choirs are preparing to perform their end-of-the-year songs as an assembly for their peers!  There will be singing, dancing, fun costumes and solos!  Reagan Teachers, keep your eye out for an upcoming date and time!

HEIDISTRONG
On April 3rd, the Reagan Mustangs gathered together for a “HEIDISTRONG” assembly.  Dr. Sever and Mrs. Sembritzki were on hand to watch as the students of Room 205 and their parents presented Mrs. East and her family with a check for $4,000 to help with medical bills and related expenses.  The students raised this money through the sale of “Team East” t-shirts and wristbands.  Their motto, “Your Battle is Our Battle,” was shown to be much more than just words.  Gestures including the creation of a Facebook account, meal rotations, a giving tree, and students shaving their head shaved all reflect the sense of community that has surrounded Heidi during this difficult time.  Thank you to Mr. Rodriguez for providing the Reagan staff with the “I am HEIDISTRONG” t-shirts.  We owe a special debt of gratitude to Mrs. Susan Mello who joined our staff as a long-term sub for Heidi.  Also, thank you to the KES staff who donated 44 sick days so that Heidi could continue to receive her paychecks.  We are pleased to announce Heidi is now 100% in remission.  She will be continuing a last round of chemo to ensure her progress and is currently working towards being placed on a bone marrow transplant list, in case she should need it.  Heidi is already looking forward to joining her Reagan family next year!

Track and Field
On April 13, 18 students from Ronald Reagan Elementary participated in the Fresno County Qualifying Track Meet held at Reedley High School.  The student athletes competed against over 1,000 other Fresno County track student athletes, which made for quite a day.  In the end, all the student athletes did an outstanding job, representing Reagan and Kingsburg well, as we had Cobi Stewart, Skylar Rollins, Bianca Valenzuela, Brianna Linder, Taylor Hodson, Dillon Sever, Denise Elias and Caleb Nelson qualify for the next meet that was held on April 27 at Sanger High School.

On April 20, 2 students (1 from Reagan and 1 from CVHS) competed in the Fresno County Qualifying Track Meet for Juniors and Intermediates held at Selma High School.  The student athletes did a great job as we had Avery Lloyd qualify in the high jump for the next meet that was held on April 27 at Sanger High School.

Great job to all who participated!

STAR Testing
On Monday April 22nd, music was blasting on the outdoor stage as students danced their way into the beginning of our weeklong focus, “Take PRIDE in the STAR.”  All this week, crazy activities will be happening to get the kids excited and involved.  Monday started with the presentation of STAR t-shirts to all students who jumped a band or achieved a 600.  Other activities such as water balloon contents and a proposed cream pie “deal” involving our own leaders, Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Sansom, led into our main event, a special assembly held on Friday at lunch where students were encouraged and motivated to show their Pride in the STAR during testing.  Go Mustangs!

That's a wrap!
After forty students took the stage with confidence April 11-14, the curtains have closed on another great production.  The Reagan Elementary drama students were supported with countless hours volunteered by parents, community members, and teachers.  This year's production of The Little Mermaid Jr. was a hit with many people but especially the little girls of Kingsburg who dreamed of one day being a Disney princess.  With wide eyes and amazed faces, audience members greeted our actors with appreciation and admiration following each packed show.  Although one overly excited little audience member pulled the fire alarm during our last performance, we were still able to go out with a bang!  This was our sixth production at Reagan Elementary and parents and students are already looking forward to next year.  We hope you were able to enjoy a performance and look forward to watching our students develop their talents in the classroom and on the stage.

 6th Grade Science Camp
Four 6th grade classes are gearing up to head to Science Camp at the end of this month.  This is always such a great time as students and teachers take the classroom outside.  Calvin Crest Camp does a fantastic job every year providing a unique and special experience for each student, and there are many life-long memories made during the week.  The students get to see another side to their teachers, the teachers get to extend their working day to 11:00 pm, and a great time is had by all!

Rafer Johnson Jr. High School - April News

RAFER JOHNSON JR. HIGH SCHOOL

Recently, 11 students represented RJJH and CSU Fresno at the MESA Day Regional competition at Fresno State, competing against students from both UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara MESA Centers.  These students had previously earned the right to compete at the regional level of competition with 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place wins against other students in our area.
Congratulations to the following students for representing Fresno State, Kingsburg, and RJJH with your excellent performance at the regional MESA Day competition:  Hena Sihota (1st place, Geometry Solo Math); Ryan Flippo, Carlos Gonzales, Hena Sihota, and Zoya Sihota (2nd place, Team Math Quest); Macey Hammerstrom (2nd place, "Speak Up" speech competition); Julie Clausen, Garrett Cooper, Tyler Hodges, and Scott Sheffield (3rd place, Prosthetic Arm Challenge); and Jessica Emerzian and Jessica Reis (4th place, Model Science Eye).

Now that competition season is over in our MESA engineering class, we are applying some creative engineering skills to end-of-year projects.  In class, students have learned about simple machines and conservation of energy in preparation for their "Rube Goldberg Challenge," attempting to perform an easy task in a complicated and interesting way.  Student teams of five are working to design, build, and test a Rube Goldberg machine that will press the "Easy Button"  (irony intended) using at least seven energy transfers and three simple machines within one cubic meter of space.  Meanwhile, an optional out-of-class assignment is always a bonus credit option for students, as many are diligently working on building cardboard boats for our combined RJJH / KHS MESA end of year barbecue bash and pool party.  We look forward to testing our finished products soon, and invite those interested in viewing the Rube Goldberg devices to come to the RJJH Open House on May 20th, where they will be demonstrated.

Ali Herevia and Jewel Hurtado represented the RJJH choir at the Kiwanis Dinner, Tuesday April 23rd .  Kiwanis members were very impressed by our talented musicians!

Emily Hamlin, Ali Herevia, Jewel Hurtado, Emily Miguel and Rebekah Waltz will be representing the RJJH choir at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday, May 2nd at the RJJH gym.

Tuesday, May 28th at 7 pm in the KHS little theatre is the RJJH Olympian Choir end-of-the-year choir concert combined with the KHS choirs.  This year our theme is, “Mickey Meets Oscar,” featuring academy award winning and nominated songs!  It will be a fun production you won’t want to miss, especially if you are a Disney lover!

Roosevelt Elementary School - April News

ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Roosevelt is buzzing with spring activity!  We have studied about the parts of plants and their functions.  Students have been drawing and diagramming plants and have learned about simple and compound leaves, roots, stems, and flowers.  Room 22 spent some time observing and looking inside carnations to see how the stems, nodes, flowers, and stamen are connected.  It was interesting to see the tiny “straws” that draw the water from the roots to the leaves.

Now we are moving on to how animals meet their needs.  The students can now tell if an animal is a herbivore or a carnivore by observing its teeth.

Classes are busy preparing for open house on May 2nd.  Room 32 has studied communities and has posted art that depicts sights right here in our own Kingsburg.  Several classes are studying ocean animals as part of our animal unit, and the insect world is being explored in Room 30.

Our Character Counts trait of the month is caring.  Our students are learning more about how to be kind and considerate.  It’s great to see them thinking of our school as a team.  As teammates we encourage one another to be the best we can be!
