This
is an informal Board report to staff to make you aware of Board action. This report is not to be construed as
official Board minutes; but rather, a reflection of action taken by the Board at
their regularly scheduled meeting on August 19, 2013.
Superintendent’s Report
Recognitions
American Legion Post #191 Donation of Classroom Flags - The Kingsburg American Legion Post #191 donated 126 American flags for all of the classrooms in the district. Members of the American Legion Post 191 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 191 attended the meeting. Graetian Thiesen gave a presentation on the method she uses to instruct her students on the meaning of the words in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Communications
Back-to-School District-Wide Staff Meeting - Board members were invited to attend the meeting on August 20, 2013, 8:30 a.m., in the Reagan Elementary Multi-Purpose Room.
Get-Acquainted Nights - The schedule of get-acquainted nights was given to the Board
members.
Kingsburg Public Safety Committee - Dr. Sever has been attending the committee meetings for the past six months. The Safety Committee will have a booth at the district’s get-acquainted nights and distribute surveys to the public regarding Kingsburg’s safety. A town hall meeting will be held to share the results of the survey and to let the public know what the committee has been doing to build awareness in the community.
Character Counts - Last
year, the district received funding from Educational Employees Credit Union
(EECU) for a “Character Counts” education program, providing materials for each
school, including banners in the cafeteria and posters in every classroom from
Pre-Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
The pillars of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness,
caring, and citizenship will be taught not only throughout the district, but in
the community as well. The police
department, fire department, and the city council will receive materials to
reinforce these traits outside of school.
Assistant Superintendent’s Report
New Teacher
Workshop - The first new teacher’s workshop was held on
August 13. Among other topics discussed
were district information and SIOP.
Common Core Summer
Institute – During the last week of July, 30 teachers and
three administrators attended the Common Core Summer Institute to learn more
about Common Core. Teachers submitted
lessons to a repository, allowing them to access Common Core materials from all
over the country.
Science Camp - The district has made a commitment to make sure science camp takes
place this year. A parent meeting
will take place at Reagan Elementary School on August 22 at 7:00 p.m.,
immediately following the Get Acquainted Night, to let parents know that funding
is an area of concern for future years.
CBO’s Report
Budget
Update - The district is still waiting to find out
the final details for the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). We are anxious to hear about guidelines
regarding the distribution of funds and how much will be restricted. Carol Williamson is working with the
secretaries and SARB/District Liaisons to make sure student data is accurate in
CALPADS, as this will drive our funding.
The actual amount of Common Core funds per ADA should be known
soon. Melanie Sembritzki will chair a
Technology Committee in order to determine what will be needed for the
transition to Common Core.
